Most people know Cullera for its beach. But beneath its castle, in its medieval alleyways, and in the arcades that lie hidden beneath the Plaza del Mercado, Cullera holds two stories that almost no one tells.
1550. Dragut’s Raid.
On May 25, 1550, Dragut—Turgut Reis, Barbarossa’s lieutenant and the most feared Ottoman corsair in the Mediterranean—launched a surprise attack on Cullera. He sacked the city, took hostages, and exchanged them in the cave that now bears his name. After the sacking, the fear of another raid forever changed the way Cullera viewed the sea.
1808. The Path to Salvation.
According to research by Dr. Ana Mafé, the Holy Grail was taken from the Cathedral of Valencia to escape Napoleon’s troops. Cullera was its first stop. From there, Europe’s most closely guarded artifact continued on through Gandia, Dénia, Altea, Villajoyosa, Alicante, Ibiza, and Mallorca. Five years later, with Napoleon defeated, it returned to the Cathedral of Valencia, where it remains to this day.

Led by Jaco Müller, each group becomes the star of a real-life adventure. Tests of ingenuity, mysteries to solve, and puzzles at six different points along the route. Fun and learning at the same time—without even realizing it.
The route begins at Cullera Castle and winds through the historic center, passing by the Torre de la Reina Mora, the Plaza del Mercado and its 1938 air-raid shelters, the Parish Church of Santos Juanes founded in 1248, City Hall, and the Casa de la Enseñanza.
Behind the game lies real content on history, art, and heritage: 16th-century Mediterranean piracy, the Path of Salvation of the Holy Grail, medieval Islamic heritage, and local archaeology. History comes to life because the students actively participate.
Elementary schools, middle schools, and universities: Aimed at students of all ages and their teachers. Accompanying teachers participate free of charge.
